This is my first Wii experience with TW, but I’ve been a fan of the PC version for many years. I must say I’m disappointed with the Wii translation, as it lacks any sense of feel I had expected to have with the Wii Remote.

As mentioned many times, the putting is so silly it pretty much ruined the overall game for me. Woods and long irons are too easy to hit, even in advanced mode, but chipping and putting are just too difficult. There is just no “feel” involved, and anyone who has played golf knows the short game is all about feel. What is the deal with having a 5 foot putter, 10 foot putter, etc.?? How could Hank Haney accept that? Wii Sports golf got putting so much more right.

Also, the graphics are a disappointment to me as well (I know it’s the Wii, but still), and the announcers are awful (and why can’t they let the ball land BEFORE telling me my drive is going in a bunker?).

Overall I was hoping for a more realistic playing experience, especially with the Wii Remote. Here’s hoping version 10 gets that right.

Bear in mind I’ve only played two rounds.

*The game seems to have some cool new features, many of which I have yet to explore.

*The Tiger challenge mode for earning points and raising your abilities is still annoyingly slow having to watch your opponent hit their awful shots.

*They were smart to cut back on the absurdly generous putt preview from ‘08 – though that could have been a much smaller allotment of preview time rather than a new system.

*The graphics are a bit improved and look great.

*I haven’t played online yet, but if there are enough people out there, playing live will be sweet – maybe enough reason to buy the game.

**I cannot believe they messed with the putting system from ‘08.

It was the most comfortable and intuitive system (you adjusted the length and speed of your swing and had so much feel) and I was sure it could never be topped – but for some reason they decided to attempt that and completely blew it. Now it’s back to WiiSports style full swing on every putt and feels awful – no connection at all to a realistic stroke.

***The first time I created a character and started playing there was a glitch where my A button would not zoom in, making the game essentially unplayable if you can’t see where your shot is landing. Reseting did nothing, I had to delete my profile and start a new one and it was corrected. Had I taken the time to fully customize my facial features it would have been incredibly irritating. As is, I hope it was a one time thing, doesn’t happen to others, and doesn’t randomly occur midway through my season.

The putting won’t keep me from playing and, if I’m allowed to edit my review, I’ll see if my feelings need revision after some more time with the new system. I’ll also post whether online competition is readily available. If not, and if you played and liked the ‘08 version, I’d say pass for now.

Sorry EA, but you ruined the perfect putt.

  3. I gave this game as a gift – so I don’t own a Wii but I watched the recipient play & it was boring to watch and play – he said it was difficult to figure out how to play and the “club” was not accurate to a real golf swing. Meh!

  4. I have to say that I have played the game a couple of times now and compared to 08 I REALLY do not like the new version. There are some things that are okay but when it comes to the actual golf experience itself, EA didn’t do themselves any favors changing the controls the way they did.

My main issue is with the putting. I don’t understand the thought process behind the change between 08 and 09. In 08 the putting was understandable if not always the most realistic. It at least made sense with how the mechanics of the actual game are. In 09 you have multiple putters starting with a 5ft and gradually increasing to the 120ft…I am usually okay with change but this does not make any sense to me…in golf you usually only have one putter so having 6+ putters doesn’t make any sense. In 08 if you are 1-2ft from the hole you just had to give it a little tap…in 09 you have use the 5 ft putter and hall all the way back just to go a couple of inches…just doesn’t make any sense…

Well that is my rant about 09. I will be sticking with 08 until the next version…hopefully they correct this awful system of putting.

    Hope this helps!
